Introduction
Building before and after moving. It seems attractive. However, for beginners, it may not be useful as it seems when playing with this Titan. This god power has a limit of not moving up, so you can’t directly win on level-2 with this power. Bad news for that. However, if Prometheus is allowed to move up when he uses his power, he will definitely be banned from this game. Why so? He is already super strong now! As the writer of this full guide, one of the gods that I don’t want to be against in Santorini is Prometheus, he is a simply decent multifaceted. He is invulnerable to most of the common winning strategies, like Corner-L, and he has so many winning possibilities as long as he is on a level-2’s, because he can just do what Demeter can do. Moreover, he can be a brutal builder like Hephasetus, turning a level-1 to a tower in no time. What’s more. He can dome your level-2’s like Hestia by building twice on it, while Hestia cannot do this on perimeter space. Playing against him is an utter trouble.

God Power
During your turn, if your worker does not move up, it may build both before and after moving.

Category
Player build

Explanation
This power starts before the move stage. Your worker may choose to build an additional block first, if you do, you forfeit to move up.

Game Strategies
Early Game
Once I have thought of a guaranteed level-2 start strategy by Prometheus, while I find no solution to that. Assume first mover Prometheus, build two level-1’s at the corner like Demeter. This is a guaranteed level-1. Next, move up to a level-1 and build a level-2. If no one blocks you, move up. If someone applies level-3 blocking on you, build behind yourself, and move to the new block, then build on the old block. What?

Here, you can see Prometheus being unstoppable to move up to a level-2. You just need to keep doing what is mentioned above and finally corner up your safe level-2, or two-way level-2’s. I can’t really find a solution for this. Thus, the key to destroying this plan should be the god power. For god that without an aggressive power, it can never stop Prometheus from doing so (Chronus: Somebody’s calling me?). Thus, Prometheus could win in the early game. After moving up to a level-2, simply use your power to create more level-2’s so as to corner up your winning position.

Mid Game
Here, we will move on to the later stage of the game. However, the following guide of Prometheus is based on the case that the gods against Prometheus can do something on him in the early game. Some good examples are Pegasus or Atlas. If you are using, um… yea… Chronus, I don’t think you can reach the mid-game.

Assume you are in an advantageous position, you should have won since Prometheus is like Hephaestus. Simply build up the area and your opponent can never go up, so you can easily corner up the winning position later by building a two-way tower like Demeter. This part is uninteresting.

In other situations where you need to be aggressive, while defending your opponent’s move. You may try to use domers strategy, by doming the level-2’s of the opponent by your god power, and expand your area of level-2’s like Hephaestus. Moreover, for your defense move, if your opponent creates some dangerous level-2’s like Corner-L, simply place a worker at the corner. Prometheus can build without moving using his power, so he is invulnerable to corner-L! That’s why in the intro I said Prometheus is so bothering. You will feel very hard to corner up a winning position against him.

However, other than the common aggressive strategy applied by Demeter or Hephaestus, Prometheus has his own aggressive strategy in the mid-game. Here we will give some example:

As Prometheus being the first mover, his winning move might be unclear to a beginner, but some good players should spot his winning move here. Build at D3, then move to D3 and build at E4. Thus, one playing against Prometheus requires to be super careful. As long as he is on a level-2, he can create some winning tower in no-time, even if he is standing on an alone tower. This is what Demeter and Hephaestus can’t do! For Prometheus, try to move to the area of level-1’s so that you could have more aggressive possibilities. By keeping this aggressive momentum, you may finally corner up a winning position by your opponent doming your level-3’s.

Late Game
The late game investigation of Prometheus is actually quite similar to Demeter and Hephaestus. I would not talk much here since it is quite repetitive. However, I do think that when countering Prometheus in the late game, forcing his worker to move down is always a good choice. Like Hermes, when Prometheus moves up, he loses his chance to use his power. Unlike Demeter and Hephaestus, where a must-win situation can be easily created by moving from a level-1 to a level-2. Thus conversely, Prometheus should have a planful build such that he doesn’t need to fall for defending, which is actually simple for him. For example sometimes, you may use your first build to smoothen the levels, and use the second build to defend. Using this strategy, you will be less likely to fall too much in the late game, and hopefully win the game.

Specific Matchup
Demeter
This is a classic matchup, where both gods can build twice, and Prometheus seems to have larger constraints. However, Prometheus in fact does better in defending, since he can simply stand at some corner and defend by his power of building without moving. In most of this matchup, I realized that having Demeter to move up to a level-2 in the early game is inevitable. As a Prometheus, simply try to stick with Demeter on some level-1. In this case, packed along with your crazy defensive power, you can defend all Demeter’s aggressive towers by your power. Keep in mind for two points. First, you can defend by the first build without moving, in this case, make sure you have some smoothened level around you so your move won’t force you to move down. Secondly, you can defend two-way towers better than Demeter, since your two builds are more distant. A fair and super fun match.

Chronus
The early game strategy from Prometheus can be easily applied on Chronus to reach level-2. However, Chronus can exploit this strategy and create 5 complete towers easily. Beware that if Chronus try to dome the level-3 and let Prometheus move up, Prometheus may easily extend the area of level-2 and create two-way towers. Thus, before Chronus try to dome level-3, try to have one worker stick with Prometheus on some level-1, so that Prometheus cannot easily corner up the winning position by extending level-2s. From this, we should realize that it may not be the best for Prometheus to use that mentioned strategy to reach a level-2, when facing Chronus.

Scylla
Prometheus biggest drawback is to move up. He loses his power when he moves up. As we know, Scylla can easily pull you down a level, and Prometheus needs to walk up Santorini slowly again.

Conclusion
As I said in the article, Prometheus is definitely a powerful god. However, since its build occurs before moving, playing with or against Prometheus requires a specific moveset and strategy. Common winning strategy like Corner-L does not threaten him, and two-way towers from Demeter or even Graeae (distant two-way towers) may not yield a guaranteed win. Thus, the counterintuition might make him not a good god for beginners. However, upon deep investigation and learning of him, you can quickly show his both aggressive and defensive sides powerfully. And definitely, his tier ranking is impressive. :)

Tier Ranking: A

Unlike Demeter, Prometheus is not as easy to use for a beginner. However if you are more experienced in Santorini, as long as your Prometheus is on a level-2, it is as dangerous as Pan. Moreover, as an opponent you need a planful build to prevent Prometheus from doming your winning position. Hence, choosing Prometheus is always a good choice after some investigation on him.

Introduction
Everything goes wild!

With the God of the Wild, both Pan and his opponent will go wild during the game. OK, simply put, for me, Pan is a god that alters the normal behaviour of players in Santorini. Santorini is a game of blocking others to move up to a level-3. For Pan, Santorini is a game of being blocked to move up to a level-2. LOL.

For beginners, Pan seems to have a huge advantage: his additional winning condition is quite easy to achieve if you put effort into it. However, when they try it out, they usually end up getting stuck on the ground or first floor. Why? The reason is simple. He does not have any active power. Opponents can easily apply level-3 blocking on him and he will be stuck in the level-1 forever. Moreover, since he has no active power, when it comes to defense, what he can do for his best is to be aggressive. ATTACK IS THE BEST DEFENSE.

God Power
In your move stage, if your worker moves down two or more levels, you win.

Category
Winning Condition

Explanation
This power happens in the move stage, which is the same as the usual win, where you move up to the level-3. Hence, this power is affected by Hera where “you cannot win by moving into a perimeter space”. Moreover, you can win by falling from a level-3 to level-1 or the ground. Remember that you can be staying on a level-3 without winning when you are against Minotaur, Hera, Charon, etc. In this case, simply dropping to a level-1 or the ground can win you the game.

Game Strategies
Early Game
Remember the turns requirement for each god to win? Hephaestus requires 4. Demeter 5. Most of the gods require 6. Is Pan a fast winner among them? Yes. He requires 5 turns to win. Thus, Pan can usually control the pace of the game. In the early game, someone likes to apply level-2 blocking on Pan, while some likes to apply no-interaction strategy. In my opinion, both are not a good choice. Instead, try to stick with Pan but you don’t really need to block his level-1. There are several reasons. Firstly, If there are too many level-2’s on the board, a careless move that helps Pan to corner up a safe level-1 may lose the game, since Pan will have n-ways to move up further, and being on level-2 usually leads to a Pan’s win. Secondly, if you apply no interaction strategy, you are never faster than Pan unless you are double builders like Hephaestus and Hestia. Even for Hestia and Hephaestus, Pan can have one worker to defend your move, while one worker to be moving up. In this case, Pan can still win the game. Do not forget that Hephaestus standing on level-2 facing a level-3 can be easily defended by doming the level-3, while Pan standing on level-2 facing several ground spaces is a MUST WIN.

Thus, the best strategy against Pan is neither level-2 blocking, nor no-interaction. For Pan, if your opponent applied level-2 blocking, simply keep building level-1 until you can corner up your level-1. Your opponent will regret building so many for you. (There are some counter gods that can actually apply level-2 blocking on Pan) If the opponent applies no-interaction strategy. Ignore him! You are always faster! In these two cases, things might be uninteresting since Pan may achieve an instant win.

If your opponent sticks with you in an area of level-1’s, we can proceed to the mid-game and explore further.

Mid Game
Here we only focus on when the opponent sticks with you in an area of level-1’s, as I think this is the only interesting case I need to investigate. Since there are no level-2’s available on the board, Pan cannot have an n-way up to level-2, while every level-2 will be easily blocked by level-3 blocking. Here, for Pan, seize this level-3 blocking. Try to have your opponent blocking the spaces that are next to the corner, especially B2, B4, D2, D4. Doming these four spaces can block most of your opponent's convenient path and you may easily corner up a safe level-2 and win the game. For Pan, try to build safe level-2’s on these 4 spaces and force your opponent to block them. For Pan’s opponent, try to stay neighboring with these four spaces, while on a level-1, so Pan’s building here will simply let you go up, instead of blocking these spaces. Moreover, do not actively build level-2 or else Pan may easily create an n-way to level-2’s. Here we have an example:

As the opponent being the first mover, if its worker still stays here during the end of the turn, Pan can move to D3 and build at D2. This forces the opponent to level-3 block him. By then, the corner D1 E1 E2 may become a perfect place for Pan to set up his safe level-2. Thus, the opponent of Pan should set up an area with more level-1’s. In this case, Pan can hardly corner up his level-2. Someone may feel like an area of level-1’s will help Pan to go up more easily. However, as long as you keep applying level-3 blocking on perimeter spaces of Pan’s level-2’s, a large area of level-1 instead makes Pan’s power useless, since he can never win by moving down! Thus, winning Pan could be a long game, but try to be patient and beware of the positioning of your worker. Do not let Pan easily corner up a level-2!

Late Game
Actually I do like to omit this stage for the investigation of Pan, since Pan seldom reaches the late game, unless fighting domers, where domes are placed everywhere on the board so the game quickly turns into a late game situation. For a symmetric late game, where there are so many level-2’s and no much ground available, I believe Pan has lost since he got no power fighting against the opponent. For an asymmetric late game where level-2’s only concentrate on one side of the board, it would be more interesting to look into.

In the earlier stage of the game, I keep mentioning level-3 blocking on Pan, while winning the game requires to move down a level-2 or move up to the tower. Why do we need to be so desperate in blocking Pan to go up to a level-2? Alright, I have not mentioned how disastrous is Pan standing on level-2’s, so let me talk about that in this part, considering Pan and his opponent are in a big area of level-2’s..

As Pan being the first mover, Pan can move to E3 and build at E4, then move to D4 to secure a win. As Pan is the second mover, just try to move to the edge of the level-2’s while doming your opponent’s tower. So you can see, the 50:50 situation in a normal situation becomes super favourable to Pan. This is the power of Pan.

Thus, just block his level-2 as if he is moving up to a level-3!

Specific Matchup
Good Jumpers (e.g. Artemis/Pegasus/Triton/Iris):
These can apply level-2 blocking on Pan and easily use the level-2’s area to set up. Moreover, they super turbo can help them easily block Pan’s move-up, and Pan can hardly corner up his level-2’s.

Chronus
Chronus finally finds some winning chance. Level-3 blocking would be even more dangerous on Pan since Pan cannot move up, while complete towers could help Chronus win. For Chronus, stick with Pan on an area of level-1’s. Don’t actively build level-2, or else Pan may easily create n-way up to the level-2. This would be a fun and fair match.

Eros
The match between Pan and the other gods is usually Pan who controls the pace of the game. Every god is unwilling to build a level-2, while blocking every level-2 that Pan is going up. For the match against Eros, the thing is quite different. Eros requires 3 turns to win, which is super fast and Pan definitely needs to defend, but the defensive power of Pan is super bad so I believe Pan would have a hard match against Eros. Though there is still a chance for Pan, so this choice is still okay in Tournament Setup.

Hera
It is a fun match. Hera can prevent Pan from winning by moving to a perimeter space. While inner space is usually full of level-1. Does that mean Pan would have a hard time? Not really, Pan can move up to a level-3 on the perimeter space and move down to a level-1 on the next turn to achieve a win! Thus, this is a fair and fun matchup.

Hypnus
The winning turns requirement for Pan becomes longer when he is against Hypnus… Pan needs to have two workers to be on level-2’s, and then move one of them to the ground. It requires a very long effort and usually Hypnus has already achieved victory. In this case, Hypnus can simply apply a no-interaction strategy and build for his own victory. Pan’s best defensive weapon: being aggressive can no longer be useful against Hypnus. Pan would have a super hard time here.

Conclusion
Many beginners complain that Pan is OP. Frankly, Pan is an insane god for a beginner since playing against him is counter-intuitive. We need to desperately apply level-3 blocking which we may not do so often. However, if you have the sense to destroy Pan’s level-2 patiently and planfully, you can easily defeat him with your god power. Remember that Pan is bad at defending. The common winning strategy like Corner-L should perfectly defeat him. However, can you keep yourself safe in front of his overwhelming level-2’s? If you do, you acquire the key to defeat Pan.

Tier ranking: C.

Though being counterintuitive to play against him, after being accustomed to strategies to play against Pan, you should possibly achieve a win finally in the late game. Just be patient and Pan can do nothing on you in the usual late game.

Introduction
With his powers similar to Apollo, Minotaur also seems useless at first. However, the truth is completely different. Not only can he give himself an advantageous position, but also he can push his opponents to more and more disadvantages. But how should he use his pushes?

God Power
In your move stage, your worker may move to an opponent worker’s space, if their worker can be forced one space straight backward to an unoccupied space at any level.

Category
Player move/Opponent forcing

Explaination
This power is activated during your move stage in the turn. The word “move” is used so this only happens when you actually can move to that space. Thus, minotaur cannot push a level-2 opponent from the ground. Moreover, if the space behind the opponent is occupied (i.e. with a worker), you cannot push him. Remember that you can push him to ANY level. That means you can push a grounded worker to a level-3, but this won’t yield a loss, since his moving up does not happen in his move stage. Moreover, your opponent worker needs to be forced one “space” backward, so if the space behind them is the wall, you can’t push them (not even Urania).

Game Strategies
Early Game
Minotaur’s power is so significant in the early game, like Apollo, by using level-1 threatening strategy. Thus, he is required to stay close to the opponent. Do not try to apply no interaction strategy. Your power will be useless because you cannot push them around. Try to stay close.

Minotaur is pretty good at pushing people so similar to Apollo, you can wait until they move up to a level-1 and then push them off. What you don’t want to do is to make it so if they move up, you can’t push them because they would run into the wall. That means you may not want your opponent to go up in the edge space. Clearly, level-2 blocking should apply here. Try to use level-2 blocking on your opponent’s level-1 in the edge space to force them to go up in some inner space. This can utilize your pushing power. Remember that for every push, you would like to put them in a bad position while putting you in a good one at the same time. If they try to run away and you are on a level-1, you can use your second worker to follow them. Another good strategy is that, if they put a level 1 behind them so your push will force them to go up, you should still push them because they will anyway have to move down to build another level-1, or use another worker to build level-1 around you. Smart readers may find that this is so similar to level-1 forfeiting strategy. After you can move up while sticking with your opponent, it might not be a 50:50 position, since you can do more than your opponent, by pushing them off the edge!

Moreover, it is a good early game strategy to let the opponent worker move up first and then push them off. Then you can move up while pushing them down and you can turn the tide just like that! Then you are off to a good start!

As an opponent of Minotaur, you probably would not want to move up on to a level-1 unless Minotaur couldn’t push you off. Also you don’t want to put a level-1 behind you because you may have to come down anyways. However, sometimes this is your only strategy to counter Minotaur, given that you are not some good check on Minotaur. Just try to build with your both workers such that Minotaur’s push would not bring you to so disadvantageous or help him to corner up a safe level-2. Moreover, remember that Minotaur cannot do anything on you as long as you block his way to go to your place. Clearly, some of the player-blocking gods can easily counter Minotaur skill even in the early game. We would mention more in the specific matchup.

Tip: If there is a level 2 and no building around it, you can try to push the opponent worker up there with no really big cost.

Mid Game
A good mid-game situation is that you are standing on a level-1 with a few other level ones around you and the opponent is on the ground. Now, you are in a good position. If the opponent tries to move up again, and he builds behind him so your worker that is on level 1 can’t push him off, you can always set your second worker up to push him off. You can keep playing the push game or move on.

To move to the next step, all you have to do is build a level-2. You want to do this when the opponent worker’s are either on ground level or can’t move up. You might think that if they move up you can push them back off, but they can just build a level-2 behind them. You want to make Minotaur count.

In some situations, like if you are standing on a level-1 on C3 and there are 8 level-1’s around you. The opponent moves up and puts a level-1 behind them. Then, you can push them because even though they don’t go down to the ground level, they will have to move off anyways to get back to the other level ones. It means you limit their choice to move or else they need to be pushed off the level-1 by you!

You should be able to get to a level 2 pretty easily and if the opponent ends up getting to a level 2 too, all you have to do is push them off! Then they are off and once again you are in a good position but this time, you are 1 level higher than before.

Tip: As Minotaur you can move down from a level 2 on purpose to set yourself up to push the opponent off!

Late Game
For me, Minotaur is pretty strong in the late game, as long as you are at least 50:50 with your opponent. You know, like Apollo, if Minotaur is in a disadvantageous position, this monster can never come back.

Assume an at least 50:50 situation, with most of the board being level-2’s and some unbuilt ground. Minotaur push can easily secure a win. For example:

Here, Minotaur at E3 can move to E2 and build a tower at E3. This forces the opponent to move to D3 to dome you. However, this will bring your opponent neighboring you and you can push them off the level-2 in the next turn! Then you will be in a super advantageous position, not so far away from winning this game.

We can see that in the late game, being aggressive might help Minotaur to secure a winning-push. As an opponent of Minotaur, I prefer to have the board more evenly distributed with level-2’s, so that Minotaur cannot utilize his power well. For example, if D2 is also a level-2 in the above example. Minotaur will need a longer setup to secure a winning-push.

Moreover, remember that pushing an opponent to a level-3 will not let them win. Sometimes, this push may win the game since it in fact puts your opponent in a disadvantageous position. As your opponent is already on level-3, when he moves down, he is REQUIRED to dome the level-3 he was standing on. This limitation of his movement may easily help you to secure a two-way tower instead. For example:

As the first mover, Minotaur moves to E2 and builds at E3. This forces the opponent to move down and dome your winning position. However, this move-down will open up another tower for you to win. Thus, the opponent clearly loses this game because he is standing on a level-3. We can see the power of pushing opponents to a level-3 here.

Specific Matchup
Athena
Minotaur level-1 threatening strategy cannot apply on Athena, since when Athena moves up to a level-1 next to Minotaur, Minotaur is disallowed to move up together. Moreover, an Athena with no-interaction strategy may impose a big threat on Minotaur.

Urania
Urania swift movement along the edge may easily escape from the catch of the bull-headed monster. This could be an unfair matchup since Minotaur may not even be able to use his power once and lose already.

Scylla
Minotaur pushing the opponent means he is next to the opponent the next turn, and Scylla can use his power surely. The same apply on Scylla, where using Scylla power means neighboring Minotaur, but this is not 100% for Minotaur to apply power on Scylla since Scylla may have simply moved to an edge! Thus, I do think Scylla is a big counter for Minotaur.

Jumpers (e.g. Artemis, Triton, Pegasus, Iris):
They can simply apply level-2 blocking in the early game and swiftly move up to the area of level-2’s within one turn. With the bad building power of Minotaur, this monster can never catch up with these jumpers.

Clio
Clio’s dome is more interesting than other domers. She can move up to her token but not Minotaur. Thus, Clio may easily escape from Minotaur’s catch and secure a winning position. Again, the bad building power of Minotaur may not be able to force Clio to follow its pace, but Minotaur needs to follow Clio’s path toughly.

Conclusion
Like Apollo, Minotaur is super strong in all stages of the game, AS LONG AS your opponent is not a big check for you. However, there are quite a lot of big checks for Minotaur, so be smart when you choose Minotaur in tournament mode. Do not put him under trouble such that vs-ing Urania.

Tier ranking: B.

Minotaur could have a very hard time against jumper gods. However, as long as the opponent is not using some good counter on Minotaur, Minotaur is super easy to use and most importantly, super strong in all early game, mid-game and late game.

Introduction
Though having quick feet, Hermes do not have a strong muscle for his feet to jump easily. I thought he was one of the overpowered gods when I was on the first few days playing Santorini. However, the moving constraint is really a great limit. You cannot walk up straight to a tower from the ground, or you can’t ground yourself and move far away from the level-2 in hope of doming a dangerous tower. Most importantly, unlike other movers Artemis and Triton, you can only move up as long as you are next to a higher level in the start of the turn. Thus, Hermes is in fact vulnerable to be grounded. As long as Hermes is in a disadvantageous position, his opponent can easily ground him and achieve victory.

Anyway, Hermes does have his advantage. The most valuable part of Hermes is that as long as both of his workers do not move up or down, they can both move and either of them builds. Thus, if Hermes is in an advantageous position, he can use worker-block well, by adjusting the position of his worker to corner up the winning position. Moreover, he can build without moving. It also means that Hermes is invulnerable to corner-L strategy, since he can simply stand at the corner of the L-sign and be the protector of the corner winning position. With this, we will try to establish some useful strategy that Hermes may use. Be ready to show his speedy nature in the whole game?

God Power
In your turn, if your workers do not move up or down, they may each move any number of times (even zero), and then either build.

Category
Player move

Explaination
This only happens during your move stage. If you choose not to move up or down, each of your workers may keep moving, even back to the same space (unlike Artemis). Therefore, after you have moved the second time of your workers, you can no longer go up or go down. If you have moved up or moved down in the first move, you immediately need to build with your moved worker, since it means you do not activate your power so you just follow the game rule. Moreover, if you activate the power, you can choose which worker to build. Therefore, you can move with worker A and build by worker B instead.

Game Strategies
Early Game
What you might want to do is start blocking every level-1 they place. This is easy since Hermes can move anywhere. His limit is that he can’t move up or down and then move unlimited times. However, beware of worker’s block since Hermes is not a pusher like Minotaur and Apollo. Those level-2’s might become obstacles for Hermes to continue blocking. There is a cool thing about Hermes, which has been mentioned above, he can build without moving. That is pretty cool. If your opponent’s building plan is bad, you may be able to keep blocking until it gets down to the last few spaces. Then there is no way for them to get up, so they are trapped and lose due to not being able to move. Recall that Hermes can build without move, so he wouldn’t get stuck in this case.

However, a good building plan could actually ruin Hermes level-2 blocking strategy, so this strategy usually doesn’t last long. Yet, this is still favorable to Hermes mid-game, which will be mentioned later.

A more safe early game strategy is instead moving up one of your workers first, and extending the area of level-1’s such that you can utilize your power to move infinitely on the same level. Keep another worker on the ground for defensive purposes, to level-3 block other’s level-2, such that you gain some chance to extend the area of level-1’s. With correct planning, this strategy should bring at least one of your workers to level-2’s. If not, Hermes would have a very hard time in the mid-game and late-game.

Mid Game
As aforementioned, Hermes needs to do well in the early game. He has a huge moving-up constraint, so he will have a hard time if he fails to move up in the early game. The superior opponent may simply ground you forever and easily corner up a winning position.

Thus, the disadvantageous position of Hermes in mid-game seems uninteresting to investigate. We will instead move on to the 50:50 and advantageous position of him. The 50:50 position of Hermes is one of his workers sticking with the opponent, while one of them is below for defensive purposes. In this case, try to always stand next to your opponent to avoid any workers block and the possibility to create some aggressive tower.

In the following examples, we will show how complicated using Hermes is. We need to be careful on how moving up affects our aggressive and defensive possibilities, and the final position of Hermes at the end of the turn.

As we know that every level-1 can become a tower by Haphaestus in no time, but due to the positioning of the grounded Hermes, he can swift through to dome any tower other than C3 and E3. Thus, in this case, the level-1 Hermes can move up to E3 or E4 since the defensive job can totally be done by the grounded Hermes. Moreover, this moving up will threaten Hephaestus to move closer to you since you may grab the winning chance at E5, the corner. For the grounded Hermes, he can move up with no cost since moving up instead opens up more possibility of defense, from 23 spaces to 25 spaces now (which is the whole board). These two move-ups will open up both room for defense and attack.

Thus, using Hermes requires to study the possibility of your move in the three different levels. Like in the above example, level-1 is a better platform for Hermes to defend, so Hermes should move up to level-1 instead of being grounded. However, beware of workers' blocks. In the above example if Hermes are on level-1 and level-2, Hephaestus workers locating at D2 and E2 may in fact corner up a winning position. Thus, Hermes at level-1 should quickly build at D1 for defensive purposes. This move allows Hermes to be swifter on the same level.

Other than the above mentioned, Hermes should be careful of his final position. Using the similar example as shown,

As Hermes as a first mover, we know that Hephaestus can move the level-1 worker to D2 and build a tower at E1 in the next turn. This is now not defendable by the grounded Hermes due to the additional level-1 at D1. Thus, the grounded Hermes should move to C1 or C2 at the end of the turn. If you choose to move to C1, you can actually still move the level-2 Hermes and build by him, which keeps your aggressive momentum.

To conclude, the mid-game of Hermes is in fact how to extend your evenly distributed area, while being careful of your final position of Hermes. Better not having several areas of focus but one main area of level-1’s or level-2’s would be super favourable to Hermes power. Conversely, the opponent of Hermes should create some unevenness on the board, such as using level-2’s to corner up winning positions from a level-1 Hermes. Check that both examples given by me are in fact favorable for the movements of Hermes, consisting of a big area of level-1’s.

Late Game
Like Artemis, as a mover, the late game with many domes could be hard for Hermes. The existence of domes may destroy the evenly distributed area. It may become inevitable for Hermes to move up or down. Again, if you successfully create a big area of level-2’s here, you possibly win since you can easily corner up a winning position by moving both workers. Moreover, Hermes in fact is very good at using dome to corner up winning positions. Check the following example, it is a very common strategy by Hermes:

In the given set up, Hermes can simply stand there and keep building at A1, and finally secure a win. Yea, this is exactly the power of building without moving mentioned in the intro of Hermes. This power is super useful during your set up to top Santorini.

Defensively, again, Hermes should be careful with his final position, to prevent your opponent from cornering up the winning position. Defensive jobs should be easy as long as there are large areas of level-2’s. Thus, the counter of Hermes and late game is easy: Try to build some tower that forces Hermes to move down. It then wastes Hermes one turn to come back and may easily win the game.

Specific Matchup
Builders (esp. Demeter)
There is a specific strategy to counter Hermes, namely level-1 blocking. You can use level-1’s to block Hermes from reaching your area of focus. If Hermes comes to those level-1’s in the next turn, simply build them up to level-2’s. This job can be easily done by Demeter. Demeter can quickly fill the board to become very uneven.

Movers (esp. Triton, Artemis)
Other movers do not have move up constraints, so Hermes would be slower to move up to the area of level-2’s. In this case, try not to apply level-2 blocking in the early game. Instead, you may simply use your grounded Hermes to defend all towers, while moving up with your other workers. This strategy is ok since Triton and Artemis are not good builders, where they cannot build two-way towers for guaranteed win.

Domers (e.g. Atlas, Selene)
Atlas is speedier to dome compared with Selene since he can dome with both workers. With correct positioning of the domes, unevenness can be introduced to the board and disallow Hermes from swifting through the board. However, those domes may easily help Hermes to corner up winning positions using his power of building without moving.

Conclusion
Using Hermes requires a good planning of the board set up to utilize his speedy nature. By playing more using Hermes, one should realize that building without moving is really super powerful and usually secure a win for Hermes. However, you need to be super careful on every position at the end of the turn, and especially every move up. It is not easy for a beginner.

To counter him, it is not easy though. There are too many possibilities for Hermes’ moving and building options. Thus, the opponent of Hermes also requires to be super careful, to prevent a surprise win by moving both workers or none of them.

Tier ranking: C.

A sad tier rank but it is still strong, especially when against a beginner, who cannot easily figure out all possibilities by Hermes, and lose the game surprisingly. When Hermes is fighting a careful opponent, he might have a hard time as the way to counter him is quite clear and solid. (Create more level differences!)

Introduction
For me, Artemis is the first god I have met in this game. At the first glance, her power is so simple that I don’t think she is a good god. However, to all those who have faced Artemis, you should have questioned yourself: how can I win with my opponent being Artemis? With a good positioning of workers, she can just go everywhere on the board and dome your winning position! Moreover, unlike Hermes, her moving power is not confined to moving up and down, so she can move up two levels in one turn. Thus, moving down to the ground is not really a big cost for Artemis, she can simply come back within one turn. So how can we set up for Artemis or to counter her?

God Power
During your move stage, your worker may move one additional time, but not back to its initial space.
Player move

Explaination
It happens in your move stage. Moreover, it is a “may” statement, so you can move one time as usual.
Game Strategies
Early Game
For most of the gods, in the early game, players usually would not build a level-1 next to your worker, or your worker can simply take the advantage by moving up. Some players love to build one space away from the opponent’s worker. However in this case, the opponent can simply move next to the new block and build up to a level-2 (level-2 blocking strategy). Thus, a player would usually build at a space where the opponent’s worker cannot even touch the new block by moving one space.

However, this strategy does not work well on Artemis. In early game, unless both workers of Artemis stay in the corner, no matter where you build, Artemis should be able come and block your path, or even take advantage of your level-1. Thus, using Artemis is like a guaranteed level-1 start: if you cannot take advantage of your opponent’s building, just move one of your workers away from the crowd and set up a new platform (I personally do not recommend this one especially facing good builders. Artemis is not fast enough to move up compared to most of the builders gods), or to use level-2 blocking strategy until you can use your opponent level-1. If your opponent is careful enough to not let you go up to a level-1, you can simply build a level-1 next to the level-2’s area, just after the turn that your opponent did the same. Your opponent may not be brave enough to go up since Artemis must be the faster one to reach level-2. You would find Artemis unstoppable to move to a higher level.

For the opponent of Artemis, I would recommend building a level-1 such that, as long as Artemis reaches that level-1, she needs to build another level-1 for you. For example, having your worker at C4 building at C5. In this case, if Artemis moves up to C5, she needs to build at B5, D5, B4 or D4, which are all accessible by you. Yes this is level-1 forfeiting strategy mentioned in the intro. Moreover, ignoring Artemis and setting up a new platform for winning is still possible against Artemis since she is never a good builder. She cannot show her power without high-rise buildings around, so you may just let her move up without threat.

Mid Game
It is rare that Artemis is in a disadvantageous position here. In the mid-game, using the similar logic as your early game, you should be able to have at least one of your workers on level-2. If you really played badly in the early game such that both of the workers are grounded, use your super turbo to keep building level-1 next to your opponent’s level-2’s. Your opponent should not be fast enough to block all your way to move up to level-2’s. For example, there are level-2’s on E2 E3 E4, her opponent's worker on E3 and hers on C3.

Artemis can move to D2 to build a level-1 on E1. If the opponent builds it up, just move to D4 and build another level-1. Keep moving north and south alternatively and your opponent should finally be outplayed by you, letting you to move up helplessly. Remember that Artemis only requires one turn to come back from the ground. Do not try to leave your opponent and set up some new platform. Artemis is not a good builder and can never catch up with your superior opponent.

Late Game
I think this is the weakest stage of Artemis, where domes start to appear, though she is still powerful. As we know, without domes and workers, Artemis should be able to move to anywhere on the board, as long as her worker is in the inner space. Thus, the only way to protect your winning position from Artemis is by domes and your workers. However, if level-2 are everywhere on the board, leaving the crowd and building a far-away level-3 could help Artemis to secure a win.

Thus, as an opponent of Artemis, try to “capture” the corner. Using two workers and a dome is already enough to block Artemis from touching your winning tower. However, in order to defend an Artemis win, you need to separate your workers so that you won’t be left alone by the fast-moving Artemis. Try to dome the level-2 area such that you can lock Artemis in a small area.

As Artemis, try to set up the building such that level-2’s are not only concentrated on one side of the board. In order to utilize your turbo power, a straight rectangular 5x2 level-2 area is better than a square 3x3 level-2 area.

Specific Matchup
Domers (e.g. Atlas, Selene)
Artemis has no solution on opponents' workers blocks, unlike Apollo or Minotaur. Thus, Atlas and Selene can easily corner up a winning position by domes and their workers. Moreover, due to the lack of building power, Artemis is quite vulnerable to a level-2 doming strategy by Domers. However, Artemis could still use her quick moving ability to stay away from Atlas and Selene.

Hermes
I personally like Artemis more. Hermes on the ground is easier to be kept grounded than Artemis, since using Hermes power means not moving up. However, Hermes is able to move further, and even not move or move with both workers. Thus, in the late game where both workers are on level-2, Artemis is not as swift as Hermes does. The winning key is in the early game and mid-game. As long as Artemis did well and was in an advantageous position by the late game, Artemis could easily block most of Herme's’ routes.

Pan
Artemis is super effective on Pan. Pan is vulnerable to level-2 blocking due to his lack of active power. Moreover, as long as level-2 blocking is applied on Pan in the early game. That level-2’s area might become the winning area of Artemis since Artemis only needs only a single turn to rush up the level-2 and even top Santorini.

Aphrodite
Aphrodite cannot do much on Artemis since Artemis can move to wherever, as long as her last move is next to Aphrodite. However, I did lose to Aphrodite using Artemis. The strong Aphrodite player simply separated the two workers, cornering herself at A1, building a level-3 at A2, with a dome at B1 and grounded me at B2. Due to Aphrodite’s power, my closest worker cannot dome her winning position, but needs to move to another Aphrodite’s worker instead. However, it requires a lot of setup and I still think Aphrodite would have a bad time against Artemis.

Poseidon
Poseidon is super brutal in early game. As long as he keeps away from you in early game, he can guarantee a win. However, it would be super hard for Poseidon to keep away from Artemis, as she is really a fast mover. Without the “moving up” constraint, a careless Poseidon player could simply forfeit the whole flourishing setup to the hand of Artemis.

Conclusion
Artemis is a very good god for beginners to choose, having an easy-to-understand power. However, it is still a very powerful god. Winning Artemis is usually a long effort and is in the late game. By the late game, having Artemis to move up is unavoidable, but its moving ability is still constrained by the opponent's workers and domes. As Artemis, place your workers carefully at the end of each turn such that your opponent cannot corner up their winning position. Remember to set up the buildings so that you can utilize the fast-moving ability of Artemis!

Tier ranking: B.

The biggest threat on Artemis are domers. Without good build power, Artemis can have a bad time against domers especially Atlas, where both of his workers can dome Artemis work, and doom her whole game. As its building power is low, try to take advantage of your opponent’s building instead!

Introduction
Other than Artemis, Athena is one of the three gods I have met in my first game. As a beginner, we were not as eager as now to move up, so I did not realize the strength of Athena. However, after realizing the high win rate of Athena among all the gods I have played, I started to look into the power of the goddess of wisdom. Simply put, the most common method of winning is moving up to the third floor, but Athena stops that simply by moving up herself. As we know, a grounded worker requires at least three turns to achieve a win, but Athena can lengthen this turns requirement by moving up. Athena could be super annoying during most of the matchup. However the number of times to move up is quite limited, so when should we use them? Truly, you need to move up wisely, packed with your pure wisdom.

God Power
During opponent’s turn, if one of your workers moved up on your last turn, opponent workers cannot move up this turn.

Category
Opponent blocking

Explaination
This happens in the opponent's turn. During their turns, the system will check if your worker has moved up in your last turn. If so, their workers simply cannot move up, even for Pegasus and Iris. Beware that if Athena’s worker moved up during Dionysus’ turn, the power will not be activated since the moving up is not happening in your last turn. However, if you have moved up the turn just before Dionysus using your worker, your worker can still move up during Dionysus's turn, since they are your workers, not opponent's workers.

Game Strategies
Early Game
In the early game, everyone wants to be the one who is the first on level-1. For the user of Athena, you should be more eager to be the first one. Thus, as a second mover, Athena is a very good user of level-2 blocking in early game: building up every block your opponent builds to a level-2. Beware that your opponent should also be very careful on every moving-up possibility of you since it may destroy their whole set up, so they may still apply the same early game strategy on you. However in this case, it may set up a perfect environment for Athena to win in the late game. Having so many level-2’s may eventually provide too much possibility for Athena to move up from level-1, and hinder your movement.

Assuming a level-2 blocking in the early game, at the end someone (maybe Athena, or her opponent) would be blocked by workers or level-2 so they can no longer apply this strategy. In this case, as Athena, quickly build a level-1 next to some level-2’s area. If your opponent does move up this turn, he risks at least two turns of not moving up and watching you to go up hopelessly.

Moreover, Athena should not blindly move up. Your moving up is like a Hero Power, though being able to recover in the game. Only move up when your opponent can do so too. If you move up in the turn while your level-1 opponent is still surrounded by a level-1 area, you fail to show your wisdom. For a second-mover Athena, try to build two level-1’s first so that you can move up without any loss of momentum, while blocking every of your opponent’s moving-up. For example, move up to the level-1 and build a level-2. Then move up the level-2 and build a level-2 again. It can immediately bring Athena to an advantageous position.

Remember that the effect of blocking to move up is not related to the distance between workers. Even if you and the opponents are far away building for yourself, your every moving-ups are hindering your opponents. Thus, most of Athena's moves are interacting with your opponents. Unlike Atlas or Apollo, Athena does not need to stick with your opponent to interact with them. Hence, Athena is actually one of the best users of no-interaction early game strategy. With both setting up for themselves, Athena could crush most of the gods using this strategy.

Mid Game
This should be the most intelligent part Athena could show. As long as Athena moves up, every block you build would be an obstacle for your grounded opponent. While building up your newly built block would be super favorable for your winning, your opponent would simply ignore that block and let your other worker move up defenselessly. If your opponent is incautious of your no-interaction strategy in early game, Athena could win in the mid-game. By moving up and using a level-2 as a dome for your opponent. Here's an example:

In this case, Athena at E2 can move to D1 or E1 and build on E2. In this case, the newly built level-2 on E2 would become unreachable for your opponent. Athena will have her opponent forced to move down, cornering her winning position by a “fake-dome" at E2.

Another strategy in mid-game is to move up and build a tower next to your opponent, this may sometimes threaten your opponent since he cannot go up but only to dome your tower. For example:

For other gods, it should be still far away from winning since the opponent is standing next to two level-2’s, which means that every level-3 you're gonna build would become favorable to the opponent. For Athena, it is not the case. By going from E2 or E1, then building the tower respectively in each case, your opponent is forced to move down to the level-1 or the ground to block you instead, which puts him in a disadvantageous position. Athena can then easily win by building another tower.

If you are in a seemingly disadvantageous position in the mid-game, where both of your workers are still on the ground level. Don’t worry, an area full of level-2’s is now the best platform for you to show your wisdom. Build a safe level-1 next to the level-2’s area, while keep moving up in later turns.

Late Game
Late game is super unfavorable to Athena, where both workers are on the high levels already, meaning that Athena can seldom use her power again. In this case, some players would like to move down Athena in order to use her power. Your opponent can then grab this chance and block the path of your poor inferior Athena. Athena may no longer come back to the level-2’s area. Thus, as Athena, try to win in the mid-game. As the opponent of Athena, try to bring the game to a late game where Athena can seldom use her power. In the late game, it would become a fight between gods and the powerless Athena.

If your Athena are unlucky to be in the late game, don’t give up. I do recommend you to move down so that you can use the “fake-dome” and “tower-next-to-the-opponent” strategy mentioned above again. Yet during the move-down, try to move to the level-1 that you can have n-way back to level-2’s. In this way, you can guarantee to demonstrate your wisdom again to your opponent.

Specific Matchup
Apollo/Minotaur
Both the god of music and a monster cannot withstand the overwhelming wisdom from Athena. Apollo’s threatening strategy in the early game would become less effective, by standing next to the level-1. Athena can simply go up, saying “Hi” to Apollo while Apollo can do nothing on her! Luckily, Apollo did well in most of the mid-game Athena’s strategies especially for the “tower-next-to-the-opponent” strategy, since Apollo could simply swap the position and dome the winning position.

Domers (e.g. Atlas and Selene)
Athena’s moving up would be blocked by domers. Thus, during the match against domers, Athena should use her power to set up blocks so that your opponent cannot easily reach your area of focus. This would be hard since Athena is not really a good builder…

Pan
Athena’s moving up could block Pan’s winning. Under no-interaction strategy, no matter Pan is the first or second mover, Athena can perfectly block the moving up of Pan. For second-mover Athena, simply build two level-1 first. In this case you can keep going up without any loss of momentum.

Good builders (esp. Demeter)
Demeter is a good builder but building too many level-1 may be favorable to Athena, as it may become a support for Athena unstoppably moving up. For other good builders, try to avoid building too many level 1’s.

Hypnus
Athena vs Hypnus is a good matchup. Everytime Athena uses her power, she may risk a chance of locking her worker too. Yet, under no-interaction strategy, Hypnus should be outplayed by Athena as long as Athena set up well. The two level-1’s strategy is not enough for Athena to keep moving up, try a three level-1’s strategy instead.

Persephone
Persephone level-1 distracting strategy may not work well on Athena. Sometimes, Persephone can build a tower while leaving a level-1 open for your opponent, so that your opponent needs to move up to the level-1 without doming your tower. However, Athena moving up to level-1 means Persephone being not able to win too! Thus, their matchup is a fair and fun match.

Zeus
Athena’s early game moving-up does not work well on Zeus since Zeus can simply move up to level-2 by his power. However, those mid-game strategies still work well on Zeus.

Hades
Athena’s moving up power would be limited to 4 times against Hades. Yet, Hades has not much power to block Athena’s mid-game strategy.

Conclusion
It is easier said than done. Athena’s power is undoubtedly powerful, but it is not an easy god to play with. Setting up is more important than going up for Athena. Grounded Athena can comeback easily in the mid-game, but level-2’s Athena might actually be a joke for your opponent. Try to be ready for your wisdom every time you play Athena!

Another strategy in mid-game is to move up and build a tower next to your opponent, this may sometimes threaten your opponent since he cannot go up but only to dome your tower.

Category

Shcowcow: /* Conclusion */

Introduction
Apollo seems dumb to beginners at first. What is useful with a god that can only swap places with others? However, the truth is not like what it seems. This is because he can steal advantages from opponents and give his disadvantages to them, leaving their innocent workers in despair. In the following review, we will see when the swaps should be used.

God Power
In your move stage, your worker may move into your opponent worker’s space by forcing their workers to the space yours just vacated.

Category
Player move/Opponent forcing

Explanation
It happens during your move turn. This skill only applies when you can move to that space without that worker. Thus, you can’t move to a level-2 from ground by using this skill.

Game Strategies
Early Game
Apollo’s power is the most significant during the early game. In early game, everyone wants to at least move one worker to level-1. However, simply putting Apollo’s worker next to a level-1 would threaten your opponent not to move up. If your opponent does move up, Apollo can pull him off by swapping with him by a grounded worker. By doing this, your opponent simply wastes a single turn and would have built some block that favours your moved worker. Therefore, a smart opponent would not move up in this case. Instead, they may keep moving away from Apollo’s workers. Thus, in the early game, try to keep both of your workers next to your opponent. Do not apply no-interaction strategy, your opponent would be happy to have you not being next to him. Under no-interaction strategy, you lose Apollo’s power and may easily lose this game. Apollo is never faster than a good mover or a good builder.

Do not forget that your threat of pulling opponents off the level will no longer exist if your worker is on a higher level, so don’t be too greedy in going up at first. Wherever you go up, you should guarantee yourself to be able to move up to a level-2. Therefore, the early game against Apollo is usually a bunch of level-1 on the board, with both players waiting for the others to go up.

Mid Game
If Apollo is in a disadvantageous position, it would be very hard to come back since the opponent can just ground your worker and keep setting up. Apollo’s skill becomes nothing when its workers are kept away from the opponent, so remember to do better in the early game. If Apollo is in a 50-50 situation, with workers staying with the opponent’s, it could be hard for the opponent to fight against you. Since moving up to a level-2 is again a threat due to the swapping power, while leaving this area to find a better platform for winning would bring your opponent in a disadvantageous position. Thus, a 50-50 situation in mid-game is in fact very good for Apollo to set up. If Apollo is in an advantageous position, the power of Apollo actually doesn’t really matter, since you can just ground your opponent carefully and create the best condition for your win.

Late Game
Apollo’s power is also unstoppable in the late game. For example, there are all level-2’s on the 3x3 space on the bottom right corner. Apollo’s workers are on C3 and E2, while the opponent workers are on D2 and E3. Normally it would be hard for you to win since the opponent is standing at the center of all level-2’s, that is, your opponent can always move up to the level-3 you newly built. However, Apollos can simply swap the worker at C3 and D2, and secure a win by building at the corner.

Thus, your opponent would feel it hard to stop you from cornering up the winning position. Other than this, your opponent would also feel very challenging to corner up their winning position. Using the same example setup with Apollo’s workers at C3 and D3, while opponent’s workers at D2 and E2, with a level-3 at the corner. In this case, Apollo can dome the winning position by swapping with the D2 worker. Thus, Apollo is very powerful in the late game, in both attacking and defensive ways.

Specific Matchup
Minotaur
This would be a fun matchup. Both of the gods are waiting for the opponent to move up so that they can pull the opponent off a higher level. In the late game, the winning strategy mentioned above can no longer work on Minotaur since Minotaur movement is hard to be blocked.

Charon
In my opinion, Charon dominates the power of Apollo. There is a very small chance that Charon is worse than Apollo, with forcing the opponent to move TWO spaces instead of only ONE for Apollo (There is a chance that Charon cannot ferry the opponent but Apollo can swap, esp. in very late game where domes are everywhere). Moreover, in the early game, Apollo’s threatening ability can no longer work on Charon. Charon can still move up to a level-1, since Apollo’s swapping power would keep his worker neighbouring Charon’s worker at the start of Charon’s turn, and hence Charon would just throw him away to a deserted place on the board and further move away from Apollo. Apollo can never be able to catch up with Charon in this case. Thus, try to avoid this matchup or Apollo would have a very hard time.

Medusa
Not a big threat to Apollo but Apollo’s threatening strategy can no longer apply on Medusa. Waiting an opponent to go up to a higher level will kill your worker instead!

Poseidon
Poseidon is a very brutal god in Santorini. However, Apollo’s threatening strategy works very well on Poseidon. Poseidon’s flourishing set up would become your favour if you swap your position with him! Moreover, swapping with Poseidon’s grounded worker could destroy his whole winning plan.

Good jumpers (e.g. Artemis, Triton, Pegasus, Iris)
They can easily move away from Apollo, by simply going up from the ground to a level 2. This would leave poor Apollo on the ground without any usable power.

Urania
Apollo’s early game strategy is to stick with your opponent, but sticking with Urania would be a very hard job for Apollo. The game may simply become Apollo watching the intelligent Urania going up to the level-3 unstoppably.

Conclusion
Apollo’s power is very useful in both early game and late game, only if Apollo’s workers stick with the opponent’s. Thus, using Apollo is a game of how to stay with your opponent while moving up with them.

Tier ranking: B.

Apollo could have a very hard time against jumper gods, and Charon. However, as long as the opponent is not using some good counter on Apollo, Apollo can always prove his mighty power throughout every stage of the game.

About Us
Hi everyone. I (shcowcow) and my team is now developing a full guide of all gods in Santorini. We have done a few simple gods and would like to post it somewhere in BGA.

However, BGAWiki would not be a good place since we have a full description of how to use the god and how to counter it. It would be too lengthy to happen on BGAWiki, since BGAWiki "strategy tips" gonna happen under our gameplay when we are playing.

We would like to ask for some help about this, like can developer create a new page for us to put all the tutorial for all gods? It would be good since it is more user friendly that player can simply press on which god they would like to learn. We have thought of posting on this forum, but this is not really a good idea since it would then be hard for players to find a specific post of a god.

I hope someone (even not developer) can give an advice in doing so! Thanks!
